May      Dental Care - By Shawna Lyttle

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend visiting a pediatric dentist and establishing a "Dental Home" for your child when the 1st tooth comes in or by one year of age. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care.

Even before your little one gets their first tooth, you should use a damp cloth to wipe her gums. By 2 ½, your child should have all of his primary or “baby” teeth. Secondary or “permanent” teeth usually arrive between the ages of 5 & 7.

Some parents assume cavities in baby teeth are not a worry, but they can progress into more severe problems, such as a painful abscess, or even loss of teeth. The longer the teeth are exposed to sugar, (this includes candy, sweet drinks, starchy foods and milk) the greater the risk of cavities. Do not allow babies to go to sleep with a bottle, as liquids tend to pool around the teeth.

Teach your child good dental habits and make brushing part of your daily routine. Use a pea-size amount of toddler toothpaste with fluoride on a toothbrush made just for your toddler. It is difficult for little ones to avoid swallowing while brushing their teeth and can cause problems if they ingest too much. Be sure to use the toddler toothpaste until they no longer swallow it. Children need assistance in brushing until they are about 7 and have mastered the art.

Brushing after every meal is ideal, but at least twice a day is recommended. The before bedtime brush is actually the most important to ensure that harmful bacteria are not sitting in the mouth overnight. This is important not only for dental health, but for overall heart health and well being.

Even if your child is fearful of the dentist, there are some gentle, understanding, compassionate pediatric dentists with calming techniques and kid-friendly offices in the area. If you’re not sure who to call, our office has a list of pediatric dentists available. Give us a call!
